Life Beyond the Classroom: Highlights from the “Beyond the Bookshelf” Initiative

The “Beyond the Bookshelf” program was an insightful session organized to expose students to opportunities, skills, and experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting. The event brought together students, leaders, and alumni to discuss personal development, career growth, and the importance of building capacities outside academics. The program commenced with welcoming participants and introducing Dr. B.W Shinabade, Akeeb Adedeji The President of National Association of Public Administration Students (NAPAS) also addressed participants, emphasizing that education goes beyond textbooks and lecture halls and encouraging students to embrace learning beyond the classroom.


The Vice President and organizer of the initiative Abass Oluwafisayomi  explained that the program was designed to prepare students for opportunities beyond academics while encouraging self-development and skill acquisition. The session, themed “Thriving Beyond the Bookshelf,” focused on equipping students with the mindset and strategies needed to succeed academically and personally. Participants were encouraged to reflect on the skills and talents they possess outside their academic qualifications.

The guest speaker, Mr. Aluko Emmanuel, delivered an impactful presentation that resonated strongly with the audience. Speaking on the importance of networking, he explained how meaningful relationships and connections can create opportunities for growth and advancement. Drawing from his personal experiences on campus, he emphasized that the relationships students build today can play a major role in shaping their future. He also spoke extensively on personal branding and appearance, stressing that the way individuals present themselves contributes significantly to how they are perceived. According to him, good dressing, confidence, and character are important aspects of professional and personal development.

Another key aspect of his presentation focused on time management. He explained that effective management of time is essential for success, particularly for students balancing academics with leadership roles and extracurricular activities. He shared practical insights on prioritization, discipline, and maximizing available opportunities. The speaker further advised students to maintain a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular involvement. While encouraging participation in campus activities, he noted that students must remain conscious of their academic goals and avoid allowing outside engagements to negatively affect their studies.

Throughout the session, students gained valuable lessons on:

  • Building relevant skills beyond academics
  • Networking and creating meaningful relationships
  • Personal branding and self-presentation
  • Effective time management
  • Balancing academics with extracurricular activities
  • Taking advantage of opportunities for personal growth

The interactive nature of the program also allowed participants to ask questions and seek clarification on important issues relating to career development, leadership, and self-improvement. The speaker provided thoughtful responses and practical advice, making the session both enlightening and relatable.


  Overall, the “Beyond the Bookshelf” program was an enlightening and impactful initiative that reminded students that success goes beyond academic excellence. The session reinforced the importance of skill acquisition, discipline, networking, and intentional preparation for life beyond the classroom. 


As the “Beyond the Bookshelf” initiative continues today with the second phase of the program, students are encouraged not to miss the opportunity to be part of another impactful session filled with valuable insights, practical discussions, and opportunities for growth. Participants can look forward to more engaging conversations aimed at preparing students for success beyond the classroom and equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in today’s world.
