Some leaders grow into responsibility over time, while others embrace it early and carry it with commitment. Keshinro Segun Joseph, fondly known as Kesh, is one of those leaders whose journey as Class Representative has been rooted in service, patience, and accountability since the early days of his academic journey in the Department of Public Administration.
Kesh, a 400-level student, currently serves as the class representative, a role he took on out of a sincere desire to serve his classmates and strengthen communication between students and lecturers. For him, leadership is not about recognition or authority, but about making processes smoother and ensuring that students’ voices are heard respectfully. One of the most fulfilling parts of his role, he explains, is the ability to help resolve problems and support his classmates when needed. Being trusted by his peers is something he values deeply, and it continues to motivate him to remain committed and dependable in his responsibilities. However, the role has not been without challenges. Kesh identifies managing diverse opinions and expectations as one of the toughest aspects of being a class rep. With students often holding different views on decisions, he has learned the importance of patience, fairness, and emotional control. When conflicts or complaints arise, he prioritizes listening, understanding both sides, and responding calmly. If an issue needs to be escalated, he ensures it is communicated to lecturers or the department clearly, respectfully, and without exaggeration.
Through this experience, Kesh has come to understand that leadership is rooted in service rather than power. According to him, true leadership requires accountability, consistency, and a genuine sense of responsibility toward others. This mindset has shaped how he carries out his duties and interacts with his peers. Balancing academics with leadership has required discipline. Kesh manages his time carefully, avoids procrastination, and ensures that class rep duties do not interfere with his study schedule. His study habits include setting daily academic goals, reviewing notes regularly, and minimizing distractions to stay focused and productive. Beyond academics and leadership, serving as a class rep has contributed significantly to his personal growth. He notes that the role has strengthened his communication skills, boosted his confidence, improved his decision-making ability, and taught him how to manage people more effectively. If he were to explore another role outside being a class representative, Kesh says he would love to work within an academic committee, where he could continue contributing to student development and academic progress.
Reflecting on his journey with his classmates, Kesh shares a heartfelt message: "Although the class may have had a rough start, that does not mean the journey should end the same way." He believes there is still room for growth and excellence, and he encourages everyone to make their final year a remarkable and memorable one. Looking ahead, Kesh hopes to be remembered as a leader who was responsible, approachable, and accountable—someone who genuinely served and stood by his peers when it mattered.
