From Underdogs to Finalists: How Part One Rocked the HOD’s Cup

By Public Voice Sports Desk

The second event of the 2025 Public Administration Week — the highly anticipated HOD’s Cup — kicked off in style on Monday afternoon, as the Part One and Part Two classes of the department locked horns in a thrilling contest that ended 3–2 in favour of the freshers.

The match, which took place under a buzzing atmosphere, lived up to its billing. Although the Part One side dominated proceedings right from kickoff, it was the Part Two class who took a surprising 2–0 lead into halftime. Theophilus opened the scoring for Part Two, and they doubled their lead with a second goal before the break, taking advantage of defensive lapses.

However, the tide shifted completely in the second half.

With their backs against the wall, the Part One team returned from the break more focused and determined. Their attacking brilliance finally paid off, led by a standout performance from Olawale, who scored twice and assisted the third goal, completed by Allison. It was a comeback that drew loud cheers from the sidelines and marked an impressive debut in the competition for the newcomers.

Despite a brave start from the Part Two class, their early goals weren’t enough to withstand the pressure from the younger, sharper side. The match not only highlighted the talents of the Part One squad but also their unity and fighting spirit — traits that will surely be tested again in the final.

Meanwhile, the second fixture, initially scheduled to feature the Part Three and Part Four classes, will no longer hold. The Part Four team opted out of this year’s tournament, automatically handing the defending champions, Part Three, a straight path to the final.

All roads now lead to the prestigious OAU Mainbowl, where Part One will face the reigning champions in what promises to be a cracking finale. Can the newcomers finish what they started, or will the title remain with the kings of last year?

The stage is set. The stakes are high. The HOD’s Cup Final awaits.
