First Runner-Up at Miss Universe: The Nigerian Queen Who Stole the Show

The story of Chidimma Adetshina’s ascent to the title of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 is one of perseverance and triumph over adversity. Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, her journey was marked by controversies and challenges. Her dual heritage became a focal point of debate when she was announced as a finalist, with detractors questioning her eligibility due to unsubstantiated allegations about her mother’s South African citizenship. These claims, fueled by anti-foreigner sentiments—a lingering social issue in South Africa—sparked public outrage.

The backlash escalated into personal threats against Chidimma and her family, ultimately forcing her to withdraw from the competition. Her decision highlighted the emotional and psychological toll of xenophobia on its victims. Despite these setbacks, Chidimma maintained her composure, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support she received from both South Africans and Nigerians.

“This journey has been a tough one, but I am so proud of myself,” she remarked after her withdrawal. Determined to redefine her narrative, she embraced her Nigerian roots and competed in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, turning her challenges into an opportunity for empowerment.

On August 31, 2024, Chidimma represented Taraba State and was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event, which featured 24 contestants, was broadcast live on GOtv and YouTube. Her victory paved the way for her to represent Nigeria at the global Miss Universe pageant in Mexico in November 2024.

In Mexico City, Chidimma made history as the first runner-up at the 2024 Miss Universe competition—a monumental achievement for Nigeria. While Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark clinched the crown, Chidimma captivated audiences worldwide with her grace, resilience, and poise. Her remarkable journey also earned her the title of Miss Universe Africa, a testament to her outstanding representation of the continent.

Adetshina’s story is one of courage and determination, echoing the legacy of iconic Nigerian beauty queens like Agbani Darego, Miss World 2001. Her journey not only celebrated her individuality but also symbolized the indomitable spirit of Nigerian women on the global stage.
