Freshers’ Orientation 2026: Time Management and Self-Assessment as Pillars of Academic Excellence

 By: Boluwatife Akomolafe

The Public Administration Freshers’ Orientation and Symposium held on 29th January, 2026, at the Administrative Extension was more than just a formal welcome; it was a meaningful introduction to university life, academic discipline, and personal growth. The event kicked off at 9:00 a.m. with an opening prayer led by Musbahudeen Faruk, a Part One student, followed by the National Anthem and the Great Ife Anthem, setting a respectful and spirited tone for the day.

Freshers were formally introduced and warmly received by the department, after which an interactive game, “Two Truths and One Lie,” helped lighten the atmosphere and encourage social bonding. The department’s executive members were also introduced, giving new students a clearer sense of leadership and representation within the faculty. Special recognition was given to the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) and the Public Voice News Agency for their support and contributions to the department. There was also a brief session where participants could promote their products and services, adding a practical and entrepreneurial touch to the event. The Departmental President, Akeeb Sefiu Adedeji, delivered an inspiring message, emphasizing education as the best legacy and a major key to success. This was followed by the keynote address from Prof. Popoola, who praised the NAPAS executives for organizing the program and congratulated the freshers on their admission into the university.

Prof. Popoola spoke extensively on time management and self-assessment, describing them as essential pillars for academic excellence. He reminded students that life unfolds in chapters, and entering the university marks a major turning point that demands responsibility and focus. He stressed that time is perishable and warned against common distractions, particularly excessive use of social media. Balancing academics, spirituality, and personal interests, he noted, requires conscious planning and discipline. He encouraged freshers to understand their unique abilities, avoid comparing themselves with others, and adopt study methods that suit their personal learning styles. His closing message urged students to cultivate values such as integrity, kindness, and purpose.

The department also celebrated two students, Junaid Habeebat and her debate partner, for earning second place in an intra-faculty debate, a moment that highlighted excellence and encouraged healthy academic competition. Another impactful session was delivered by Prof. Bolanle Wasiu Siyanbade, who spoke on identity, discipline, and effective time management. Drawing from his own experience as a former student leader, he explained how he successfully balanced leadership roles with academic responsibilities. He reminded students that academic excellence is ultimately reflected in results and consistent performance.

The program wrapped up with a vote of thanks from Adegbuyi Ayokanmi, Speaker of the Public Administration House of Parliament, and concluded with a closing prayer. Overall, the orientation served as a strong foundation for freshers, equipping them with motivation, guidance, and practical advice for a successful academic journey.
