Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is known for many things: its strong academic culture, iconic architecture, and, of course, its legendary social life. From lively block parties to weekend getaways and spontaneous hostel hangouts, students here certainly know how to have a good time. But as these events grow bigger and louder, some are beginning to ask, Are we still having fun, or has it become just too much?
For many students, the vibrant energy on campus is part of what makes OAU unique. It’s a place where people don’t just study, they live. And part of that living involves music, movement, and making memories. Social events offer a chance to unwind, meet new people, and enjoy life outside of books. However, not everyone sees it that way. Some students feel the social scene is beginning to look more like a competition. There’s a growing belief that it’s no longer about genuine fun, but about being seen. The parties, the outfits, the “Instagrammable” moments, it’s starting to feel a little performative.
And let’s talk about money. The cost of keeping up with constant events, buying tickets, dressing to impress, or contributing to group getaways can quickly add up. Not every student can afford to join in, yet many feel pressured to show up just so they won’t be left out. The fear of missing out on FOMO, as it’s called, is very real, and it sometimes forces people to stretch beyond their means.
But maybe, just maybe, it’s deeper than vibes. Life at OAU is demanding. With long lecture hours, stressful deadlines, and intense academic pressure, students often need a way to breathe. For some, partying is not just play, it's therapy. A little dancing, laughter, and community might be what keeps them going through the toughest semesters.
Zikoko Magazine once noted that Nigerian students are no longer just “enduring” universities; they’re curating their own experience. At OAU, that couldn’t be more true. Students are finding ways to build joy, friendships, and beautiful moments amid the academic grind. It’s a form of self-care that's loud, expressive, and at times, essential.
Let’s not forget: social life at OAU is not only about parties. From health awareness campaigns to academic seminars, leadership training to faith-based fellowships, there’s something for everyone. Even on the same day, you could find a poetry night in Angola Hall, a mental health talk at the SUB, and a worship concert near the Amphitheatre.
This mix is what defines the campus spirit, a blend of fun, purpose, and community.
So, is OAU’s social life getting out of hand? Maybe. Maybe not. The better question is: What does social life mean to you? Some students thrive in the crowd; others find peace in smaller, quieter spaces. There’s no one right way to enjoy campus life. The important thing is that every student finds their own balance between the books and the beats, between the stress and the joy.
And perhaps that’s what makes OAU truly Great: the freedom to choose your own vibe.
