Great Ife Freshers' Week 2024: Inter-Faculty Debate Kicks Off

The Great Ife Freshers' Week 2024 kicked off yesterday with a spirited Inter-Faculty Debate, showcasing the oratory skills of freshmen from twelve faculties. Hosted by Dammy Cares and moderated by MC Deeblack, the event began at 12:33 p.m. with the school song and an opening prayer. The judging panel, led by Mr. Godspower Stanis, former Public Relations Officer, included respected judges Nina Mercy Gods Praise and Olanrewaju Oluwafemi. Participants were evaluated on their argument quality, factual accuracy, timing, and overall presentation.

The debate format allocated five minutes for each main speaker, three minutes for supporting speakers, and additional rebuttal time, with penalties for exceeding time limits. Debate topics included:


  • Corrupt democracies are preferable to dictatorships – Faculty of Administration vs. Faculty of Science
  • Civil disobedience is a moral weapon in the fight for justice – Faculty of Arts vs. Faculty of Technology
  • Subsidy is a necessary compromise by the government – Faculty of Agriculture vs. Faculty of Dentistry
  • The stigmatization of materialistic relationships should be opposed – Basic Medical Sciences vs. Faculty of Education
  • Traditional family values are incompatible with modern development – Social Sciences vs. Clinical Sciences
  • Remote work should be prioritized over traditional work arrangements – Environmental Design and Management (EDM) vs. Faculty of Pharmacy


Judges’ Remarks

The judges commended many debaters for their insightful topic interpretations and effective use of facts. They also highlighted some areas for improvement, noting issues with timing and engagement from certain teams, while also recognizing the empathetic approaches of some participants and cautioning against generalization fallacies and disorganized presentations.

  •  Social Sciences: 67 points  
  •  Agriculture: 60 points  
  •  Clinical Sciences: 64.3 points  
  •  Dentistry: 59.67 points  
  •  Education: 60.33 points  
  •  Arts: 59.3 points  
  •  Basic Medical Sciences: 57.33 points  
  •  Pharmacy: 67.67 points  
  •  Science: 48.33 points  
  •  Administration: 52.67 points  


The top six faculties — Law, Technology, Education, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, and Arts — have advanced to the second round. From these, four faculties will proceed to the final round, with the top three teams to be determined in the concluding debate later today.
